color, at last

So it’s been awhile since I’ve blogged I’ve come to find that life has sort of gotten in the way. I’ve been really making a push to be fit lately, going swimming the Y near daily now. Additionally T and I have really hit a stride with cooking at home. Not only are we spending less but we’re also making some delicious healthy meals that are spicing up the regular rotation. For instance my friend Ali told me about she makes turkey tacos a couple months ago, and now that is one of our favorite meals! We recently had success making Shrimp Po’ Boys but the real test of a recipe is if soon there after you want to make it again. That’s a sign that it’s not too hard! We’ve also added a new favorite – Enchilada Lasagne. Delicious! Well, as time has gone on, I’ve still been slowly decorating the house although I’m ashamed to admit it’s been a year now and we’ve yet to hang anything on the walls. I think both of us were really afraid to do that. Also, it is hard to commit to something to hang. Artwork isn’t exactly cheap- but we’ve recently taken the plunge and decided to hang a bunch of our own artwork – photographs we’ve taken on vacation and whatnot we’ve got some lovely shots from Lake Michigan as well as the Virgin Islands. Frames are bought (Walmart–eek), and templates made. Next we’ll be putting them on the wall to see where they go best, arrangement wise. Now, onto the matter of importance, color. I’ve found that our living room is lacking color. This was intentional for the first year as I was still learning about myself and what I like. Well, I’m proud to say that I think I’ve figured it out. The epiphany came to me when I realized that I was in in love with our guest bedroom color scheme. It dawned on me that I ought to be more bold in the lower portion of the house. And this isn’t the first time I’ve had inklings towards green. In the past I felt really locked down by the fact that our kitchen sported red curtains / red scheme. I couldn’t do anything to different in the living room because of the open plan. Finally it hit me that there was no rule stating that I had to keep the red curtains that were there when we bought the house. (Because red + green = not so good). So the wheels are turning, and essentially I’m considering putting green curtains in the living room, and white or green and white curtains in the kitchen. The reason I’m leaning to green curtains in the living room is because I feel like it will make the biggest punch of color where some is desperately needed. And making those white is too similar to what we have right now. So yes I am considering green for the living room to kitchen. Lime-ish green, but nothing offensive. Accent colors can be ivory and steel bluish grey (as in the guestroom). I think this will fit w/ my desire to bring ‘nature’ in as well and match w/ green plants and objects such as green apples or limes, etc. So there you have it, my big idea as of late. I am a little unsure if I’m rocking the boat too much here and if I should just stick w/ the red and pull some red pops on color into the living room to work with what we have. But that’s not nearly as fun. (And possibly just not as relaxing / modern / fresh of a feel as I’m going for). So I’ll be keeping my eye out on fabrics / curtains and see if anything strikes my fancy or if I get the nerve up…

a new kitchen table

After searching high and low we finally found a winner! I love that it’s got these clean lines but the finish is slightly rustic looking! We’ve got two other chairs as well so we can really seat up to 6 which is great for when the family comes to visit!

Guest bedroom comes to life

I am quite thrilled with our choice of bedding for the guestroom. Chartreuse, slate and cream have really struck a chord with me and I’m of course a fan of the giant blossoms. We bought the corresponding pillow set. It’s Martha Stewart’s Poppy Floral 6 piece set. Check the bedding out but make sure to get it on sale!

pine cone city

I’m a huge fan of pine cones. It was the first thing I decorated with in my house and the obsession continues. I just think they are one of the most beautiful objects made in nature and they represent all things I love: outdoors, forest, trees… I’ve been wondering if I should make ornaments out of pine cones this year… I made some many years ago in girl scouts and it seems a budget friendly way to get going with one’s first tree. Well, this won’t be our first tree per se, as we’ve always had a mini fake one up. But this will be our first holiday season in our new home, and with that comes much excitement and anticipation on my part to decorate. Check out Elizabeth Scott’s sterling silver necklaces here.

barbie gets a facelift

Loving the newly launch Barbie Collector website. Very nicely designed! Also, did you know Barbie now has a blog? And how cute are the shoes on her Twitter page?! I can’t take it! You combine Barbies and great design and I’m just in a tizzy. I must admit, I’m still as big a fan as ever of Barbie dolls. I had a childhood collection totaling over 100 thanks to my dad!

Happy Halloween

Hey all, hope you had a Happy Halloween. This year, I attempted to carve the cover design on Martha Stewart Living. Let’s just say it is the effort that counts. It looked sort of like Martha’s in the end but I think once you’ve been looking at Martha’s work (or her minion’s work) for awhile it’s hard for your own craft to compare up. Truth be told, I think I was a bit handicapped by makeshift tools and the lack of a linoleum cutter. Just goes to show how very important tools can be to a craft project. Despite all this, one mom that came to the door exclaimed ‘cool pumpkin!’. . . Meanwhile, I handed out mini-Play-Doughs to the trick-or-treaters and each of them invariably exclaimed ‘I got Play-Dough’. It’s safe to say they were a huge hit. FYI, you can pick up a pack of 60 at Sam’s Club for $9.98. I just remember how cool it always was to get something besides candy. Also, I have fond memories of the costumes my Grandma sewed my sister and I. One year I was an Arabian Princess, once a cowgirl, once a cat. My mom made me a sweet princess costume with a foil hat when I was probably 4. What is not to love about Halloween? All the creativity that goes into the holiday, and candy to boot!

prep in style

I picked up these little Martha Stewart Stainless Steel Prep Bowls at Macy’s, they just make me want to cook! I am also on the lookout for any stylish pantry alternative to my Tupperware, since the whole BPA business has left me feeling leery about foods coming into contact with anything remotely unhealthy. I really feel like I need to delve into more research on the matter I don’t want to act hastily.

animal erasers

How cute are these Endangered Species Erasers? They struck a cord with me because once had an orange rhino eraser–a long time ago. A cut functional design (if you could ever bring yourself to use them!), or a neat toy (older kid). Check them out at West Elm.

appetizers galore

In my quest to round out my kitchen and dining supplies I embarked into the world of Pampered Chef. The gadgets are pretty awesome- once you’ve tried it your hooked. I hosted a catalog party this past month, and after many deliberations on what I should order, I finally decided on the Pampered Chef entertaining pieces. I chose the 3 tier stand, rectangle stand and the small bowl caddy! Can’t wait for the items to arrive–and can’t wait to make some creative appetizers to go on them. I recently had the most delicious Beer Cheese Dip at my friend’s get together and I really want to try out. I’m also looking forward to designing and printing creative cards to tuck into the top of these bad boys. Being a designer comes in handy at times. I also look forward to stashing some nifty new utensils in my drawers!

Beer Cheese Dip
8 ozs Cream Cheese (Neufatchel is lower fat choice)
8 ozs Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1 minced garlic clove
1 or 2 tbsp. of Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 of a bottle or can of beer

Mix and refrigerate…enjoy!

dreamy china

I can’t explain my fixation on china. All I can think of is that it somehow epitomizes my values: family, tradition and the excitement of holiday gathering / meals, exquisite design and craftsmanship. I don’t want this comment to come off materialistic so much as I wish to express my desire for family intimacy. I love family dinners at the dining room table, always have! None of this eating in front of the TV stuff. Few objects we own are meant to last as long as china. China is something to be passed on to future generations. Seeing antique and ancient dinnerware in museums just gives me chills. China seems to be fast becoming a relic, as I’ve discussed before it seems many brides I’ve know have chosen not to register for china. This may be in part to changing lifestyles and, well, the prohibitive cost. I must say that is the one downer of the subject. Why must a set of fine bone china cost so darn much? The set I own cost around $500 for 12 place settings (porcelain certainly makes for a more cost effective solution). But I can’t help but covet this dreamy set, Waterford’s Baron’s Court China. The picture does it no justice by the way. You have to see it in person and run your fingers over the raised floral pattern and elegant platinum lining.

For those looking for an alternative to spending so much or have a more streamlined taste, I also recommend Mikasa’s Gothic Platinum for the ultimate in simple, classic elegance. This china is just white with a platinum band. Sometimes, less is more. Coming in at $69.99 a place setting it is a little more stomach-able then the Baron’s Court style at $125 a place setting.

Lastly, I’ll make a little plug for my set, Mikasa’s Parchment, coming in at $39.99 a place setting (but watch for the 8 setting set for $199!) It’s pretty elegant, too. :)
